Mima Mounds [2 hike reports]
Washington > Puget Sound > Olympia Pictures | Trailhead Location | Hike Reports

The Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve contains 637 acres of land and has some of the best examples of Mima Mounds in the world. Mima mounds are mounds of solid, several feet tall that occur in a few places in the world. The origins of the mounds are still a mystery, however the most support theory suggests they are remnants of glacial activity. At the preserve you will find an amazing display of wildflowers in the springtime and butterflies.

Mima Mounds - by akwalkaboutMonday, May 25, 2009
An interesting place to go for an easy stroll and view a variety of wildflowers, very pleasant. The sound of gunfire from the nearby range and the RC Airfield was an interesting combination to the walk. It was fun to see RC planes doing flips and rolls while on the walk and the sound of gunfire was initially disturbing. Made me wish I had known to bring my firearms as I am a hunter, and I would have loved to punch a few holes in the papers.

Mima Mounds - by NancySTuesday, September 02, 2008
A very nice day to hike through the Mima Mounds and see one of the preserved (and unique) prairies in Washington State. I hope to go back next spring when more of the flowers are in bloom.
