Trail of Two Forests [2 hike reports]
Washington > South Cascades > Mount St. Helens Pictures | Trailhead Location | Hike Reports

Trail of Two Forests is a quick loop that takes you into an interesting environment. About two millennia ago, Mount St. Helens sent molten lava down the south aspect. Trail of Two Forests is situated near the bottom of the flow, where the lava still moved but was not hot enough to destroy trees. The lava cooled around the trees and the trees eventually decomposed leaving small tunnels, caves, and pits. Boardwalks lines the route, making this hike wheelchair accessible. The boardwalk also protects the ground, so please stay on the trail. The one chance you will have to leave the trail is to crawl through a tunnel, or lava tube, nearly 30 feet long, a must do.

Trail of Two Forests - by darleneSaturday, November 15, 2008
Awesome day for a hike. Lots of people, trail in good condition.... except for one spot where it looked like flood water washed away part of the trail which was a bridge... but easy to get over... done this hike three times now gets better every time, especially when there are views of the mountain...
