The caves got there name from the group of people who first explored them. They were members of a local outdoors club, "The Apes." Ape Cave is a long, large cave (known as a lava tube) naturally carved into the rock by lava and water through thousands of years. These deep, pitch-black tunnels are an eerie and great experience. From the main entrance, the cave heads in two directions. The Lower Passage is easier and shorter. It goes about 0.7 mile past a number of formations, including a Lava Ball and mudflow floor. The Upper Passage is 1.3 miles long with a 1.3-mile trail above ground that returns to the trailhead. The Upper Passage is more challenging, with segments that climb over rock piles and a small lava ledge. Year-round temperature is a steady 42 degrees, so bring a jacket. The deepness of the caves requires strong flashlights or large gas lanterns. Parts of the upper passage are rocky, so sturdy shoes and pants are also recommended.

Ape Cave - by AJTrekker08Saturday, September 26, 2009
Started hiking about 10:30am. We weren't sure if we were going to do both the upper and lower sections of the lava tube, so we started with the lower section. It was amazing, a wonderland of exploration. You feel secluded in the cave for the most part, only being able to see what our headlamps would illuminate. It was so different when a group would pass with a large lantern, you could definitely see a lot more! Other than the dark and moderately uneven floor in the lower section, the hike .....

Ape Cave - by darleneSaturday, November 01, 2008
I only got to hike the lower half of the cave. Due to the poor lighting we brought and my daughter was scared of the dark. Next time we do this we will plan on bringing much more lighting. And possibly dress way warmer and pack a lunch. We did walk the trail above the cave from one opening to the other and the hike doing that was extreamly quiet and the path ways were mostly nice some rocks and hills but other then that it was great. Got to walk on lava made paths, their were small creeks and lo.....
