I did this as an after work hike (from Seattle) so I started from the upper trail head since after fighting traffic I arrived about 5:30 pm. It's 1.6 miles from the upper trail head and 2500' in elevation, quite the workout! The first part has a few switchbacks through the trees. Then you start climbing more out in the open, up rock filled paths. With the saddle in sight I encountered a large group of mountain goats, about 25. There were some adorable little kids and some disgruntled older males with large horns, so I tried to stay out of their way. Unfortunately they were strewn across the trail so it took my quite a while to get passed that area. There is a long, steep trail leading across the open hill side to the saddle. During the whole way up you have a great view of the Puget Sound and if you are lucky, you can see some of the big mountains in the distance. I saw Mt Rainier but it was too hazy to see any of the others. At the saddle you get your first real glimpse of the Olympic mountains. Some more elevation and a scramble up some rocks, and you find yourself at the summit with Mt Washington next door. I waited for sunset and it was gorgeous over all of the mountains. With my headlamp and a little help from the moon, I made my way back to my car and finally back home to Seattle. There were only a few people on the trail with me but a ton of bugs!
View from near the parking lot at the upper trailhead Eastern view from the hike up Mt Ellinor with Mt Rainier faintly in the distance I met a herd of mountain goats and a couple other hikers Kids! The baby mountain goats were really cute and were running all over the place The steep trail up to the saddle, almost to the summit There were some great flowers along the trail Mt Washington, to the north of Mt Ellinor The sun starting to go down over the Olympic Mountains The moon is up The sunset The sun just dropped below the Olympic Mountains One last look at the sunset before heading back down to the car The moon over Lake Cushman
