Mailbox Peak - by seanb Saturday, July 10, 2010
No portrait for seanb Not sure if this is a brutal hike, but it is definately good cardio. Three reccomendations: 1) Go on a day when it is projected to be clear weather so that you can take in all the views, 2) To avoid crowds, get an early start, and 3) bring DEET.

I've left at 6:30 and 7am before, and both times I have come across 1 maybe 2 people on the way up. Your trip back down is when you will come across others. Trip time for me was 2 hr 15 min up, and 2 hr 30 min down. I have to go slower down due to 48 year old knees. MOST IMPORTANT: bring bug repellant. The bugs up in the clearing, and at top, and blood suckers. There are a lot of them too. Might consider a long sleeve and pants as an option...

Ozette Triangle - by dreamlessleep Tuesday, July 06, 2010
Portrait for dreamlessleep I decided on this easy hike for my mom as a first backpacking trip. The trail begins at Ozette Lake and we decided to take the Sand Point section first, which appeared to be the opposite direction of everyone we met along the trail. Our only experience along the way with Rangers was at the beginning of the trail, and he merely checked that we had a backcountry permit and sent us on our way with well wishes. A series of cedar boardwalks and trail lead us through lush forest with nary a foot of elevation gain. We couldn't have had better weather, sunny without a cloud in the sky and near 90 degrees so the breeze off the ocean once we reached it felt great.

Upon reaching ...

Mailbox Peak - by snowlover Monday, July 05, 2010
Portrait for snowlover Brutal hike with a full pack. Doing it as training and it was harder on my knees/thighs than going to Muir the week before. Othere than saying I did this and using it for advanced training, I see no reason to hike this again. Glad to say I did it and if it was not foggy, the view may be nice, but overall, it offers very little other than a good workout.

Going up @ 8:00 was pure solitude, but met 40 hikers as I came back down.

Interesting to note that a newspaper stand for the 'Stranger' was next to the mailbox, complete with a few issues for your reading pleasure.
